A 20-minute practice routine that actually moves the needle

A tight, repeatable structure for guitar/bass/keys that builds technique and musicality without burning you out.

Why this works

  • Short blocks reduce decision fatigue and keep intensity high.
  • You practice “skills” and “music” every day, not one or the other.
  • The routine ends with something you enjoy—so you come back tomorrow.

The 20-minute structure

  • 3 min: warm-up (slow, relaxed, perfect motion).
  • 6 min: technique (one tiny goal, use a metronome).
  • 6 min: repertoire (a section, not the whole song).
  • 3 min: ear training (sing intervals / identify chords).
  • 2 min: record yourself once and write one note to improve tomorrow.

One small rule

  • If you miss a day, do not “make up” time. Just resume the next day.
