Choosing drum samples: the “less is more” approach
A small, consistent palette beats an endless folder of samples—here’s how to curate one.
Pick a core kit
- One kick, one snare, one hat, one clap, one perc set.
- Choose sounds that already sit together without heavy EQ.
Layer only with intent
- Layer for attack (transient) or body—not both at once.
- High-pass the layer that isn’t meant to provide low end.
Keep a “reference loop”
- Build a 2-bar groove you like and test new sounds inside it.
