Pedalboard noise: 6 causes and quick fixes

Hum, hiss, and buzz are usually power, gain, or grounding problems—not “bad pedals”.

Common causes

  • Daisy-chained power on digital pedals.
  • High-gain stacking without a noise strategy.
  • Cheap/long patch cables near power bricks.
  • Ground loops when connecting to an interface/PA.

Quick fixes

  • Try an isolated power supply for the noisiest pedal first.
  • Lower gain in early stages; raise output later.
  • Keep audio cables away from AC adapters.
  • Test one pedal at a time to find the culprit.
