When should you change guitar strings? A practical timeline
Strings don’t die on a schedule—here’s how to decide based on feel, tuning stability, and tone.
Quick note: We’re publishing regular updates to keep the site active and useful.
The three signs
- They won’t stay in tune (even after proper stretching).
- The top end sounds dull and “papery”.
- They feel rough or sticky, especially on bends.
A realistic guideline
- Gigging: every 1–3 shows (or weekly).
- Regular practice: every 2–6 weeks.
- Occasional playing: every 2–3 months.
Make them last longer
- Wash hands before playing.
- Wipe down strings after sessions.
- Consider coated strings if sweat kills sets fast.
